80 K

On a road trip with my wife to Tyler and Longview, Texas this past weekend, my 2001 Ford Escape hit the 80,000 mile mark. It was very exciting.

As it rolled from 79,999 to an even 80 K, it was as if time stopped for just a second to allow my little SUV and I a moment to reflect upon and just simply celebrate the times we've had together. Since I bought the car in September, 2005, Escape and I have journeyed nearly 50,000 miles together. It was instrumental in my pursuit of Jessica as it allowed me to travel to Tyler every weekend to see her while we were dating and then again during our engagement. Escape has taken me to sweet times of worship, fun nights of fellowship with friends, birthday parties, Christmas celebrations, Seminary classes, and more than a few Starbucks runs. I didn't even mention the time Jess and I had to sleep in Escape for a few hours while we waited for Jessica's roommate to come home and unlock the door of Jess' house. Escape made it seem like we were in a 5-star hotel.

Escape is always warm and cozy in the winter, cool and refreshing in the summer, and always seems to find the perfect song on my iPod for every occasion. She is safe and reliable, only asking that I lock her at night and fill her up when the little orange gas tank light appears.

Perhaps my greatest memory of the 50,000 miles I've shared with Escape came last year when Jessica and I pulled away from the church after saying our "I Do's" and drove to our wedding reception. We were not sure whether or not Jess' wedding dress would fit in the front seat, but Escape found a way to make it work--like she always does.
Cheers to Escape. May we have 80,000 more miles together!

Anniversary

Yesterday, Jess and I had our One-Year Anniversary! It was a blessed, wonderful year. I can't imagine my life without my beautiful Bride!

It has been the most amazing 365 days of my life! We have loved and laughed and lived an adventurous journey led by the Father. In light of all the blessings God has given our marriage this year, we wanted to celebrate. So, we went to Dallas Friday night and stayed in a suite at the luxurious Adolphus hotel, ate a great dinner at this little secret Italian place, and then went to the musical comedy, Spamalot. It was incredibly funny!

On Saturday night, my parents and Jess' parents all got together with us to eat the top tier of our wedding cake. Amazing that after a year the cake still tasted great.

We're now off to another year of marriage. Who knows what this year will bring?

Living the Mission

The year I was called to missions, God sent me to Morelos, Mexico twice to serve with the pastor, Rodolfo, and the church there, as well as with an orphanage nearby in Piedras Negras, Mexico. The following year, He sent me back for a semester. Four years later, the Lord openned up the door once again for me to go serve in Morelos. This time, I got to go with Jess and our youth group.

We worked everyday at the orphanage, roofing, building doors, painting, fixing swingsets, installing screen doors, and changing air filters. We also found a fair amount of time to play soccer with and just love on the kids there. What a joy it was to watch these students sell out for Christ as they lived the mission. With Fito (the pastor) and the church, we worshipped, passed out Bibles to a new neighborhood, and did some construction work. I even had the honor of preaching at the church in Spanish, translating for myself into English for our youth group.

One of the greatest blessings was finally getting to go to a different country with my wife on a mission trip. We loved serving together. She learned so much Spanish, worked her heart out, beautifully modled the love of Christ to everyone we met, and was used by the Lord to lead one of our students to salvation in Jesus.

The entire mission trip was amazing. It was fun and encouraging and often funny. It sparked my passion for missions all over again while blessing me through the people there. It filled me with joy to live this life with Jess and be around Fito again (in the picture below). Viva la Mision!
